Howard Lederer was born into in a family of five in which he loved participating in different card games when he was young. He discovered himself getting really competitive in these particular card games while competing against his dad. After finishing secondary school, Howard made a decision to put higher education on hold for a bit and relocated to New York City to participate in some serious chess. While competing in chess, he was introduced to a poker game taking place in the rear of the room. Howard’s first 2 years were difficult as he played extensive hours and lost most times. He made some extra cash by becoming an assistant for the poker enthusiasts. He believed he could better his game by analyzing his life away from poker. He brought about an attempt to get more rest and focus even more on poker.
The definite advancement in his abilities began when he began wagering at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the the most favorable players would frequently play against each other. Howard had access into several of the greatest players in chess. With their help, Howard would sharpen his logical thinking skills. Howard applied these strategic concepts to the game of NL holdem.
Howard Lederer also helped his sibling Annie Duke learn the game of poker. Annie Duke was a superb student of poker as she would consistently be asking questions about how to make the correct choice. Howard told Annie to move out to Las Vegas and compete in the World Series of Poker tournaments. She is one of the strongest women players the poker arena has ever seen. Howard Lederer moved to Vegas in 1993 and competed in money games for the next decade. When the WPT gained popularity, he made the decision to participate in more tournaments.
