Howard Lederer grew up in a family of five where he enjoyed gambling on different card games at a young age. He discovered himself getting very competitive in the above-mentioned card games as he was playing his father. After graduating from Sr. High school, Howard made a decision to put higher education on hold for a bit and relocated to New York City to compete in some serious chess. While participating in chess, he was introduced to a poker game going on in the back of the room. Howard’s initial 2 years were rough as he played countless hours and do not win most times. He earned some additional money by becoming an runner for the poker players. He believed he possibly could better his game by adjusting his life away from poker. He brought about an effort to get more sleep and concentrate even more on the game.

The actual advancement in his skills began when he started wagering at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the best players would often wager against one another. He was able to access some of the best minds in chess. With their help, Howard would hone his cunning thinking abilities. He applied these strategy ideas to the game of No-Limit Texas Holdem.

Howard Lederer also assisted his sibling Annie Duke master the game of poker. Annie Duke was a superb student of poker as she constantly asked questions about how to make the correct decision. He told Annie to move out to Las Vegas and play in the WSOP tournaments. Annie is one of the greatest female players the poker arena has ever seen. Howard relocated to Vegas in Nineteen Ninety Three and participated in cash games for the next 10 years. When the WPT grew in popularity, he made the decision to play more tournaments.
