Distracting Players

Do you ever get that itch? The itch to gamble, to head to the nearest gambling establishment, to uncover a superior stakes casino game of Holdem, to sit at a Black-jack table for hours on end. I like that itch. And I love to scratch it.

I also love to watch folks gamble. No two poker faces seem alike. When I wager I like to think I put on a poker face that’s impassable. But I know I have specific mannerisms. For 1, the only time I smoke cigarettes is when I wager on poker or Twenty-one. And then I chain smoke. But I chain smoke no matter whether I am winning or losing, no matter if I have a beneficial hand or bad.

I once played in a weekly poker game. The game was often 5 card draw. There was a person who played with us each week who generally wore a hat. When he was given a good hand, subconsciously, he would start touching and betting with his hat. Pointless to say, he by no means won.

The very best poker gambler I ever saw was a player who made far more actions and signals at a poker table than anyone I had ever met. He was impressive in the way he dressed. Often an pricey suit and tie, boots shined and nails manicured. He was meticulous in this manner. And he was often brushing his pants or rubbings his hands or putting his chips in tidy little piles.

I use to analyze him for hours. I’d tried to see if I could spot his tell. Picking fuzz off his jacket- did this imply he was bluffing? Stacking his chips within a short pile – did this imply he had a great hand?

Several years later I bumped into him in a very bar in Boston and we had a beer. I asked him if he had been aware of all those actions he manufactured or if they were subconscious. He informed me that each little thing he did at a poker table was intentional. He said that everyone is usually checking out everyone else’s poker face. They are attempting to notice the the tell.

So his method was to provide them lots to assume about. His thinking was if they have been thinking about him choosing a piece of fuzz off his shirt and what it meant they positive weren’t thinking about their cards.

His method was diversion. And it worked for him. Never give up a method that works for you.
